Psalm 9

Like 2019, we’re spending the Summer in the Psalms for 2021. This time we’ll be going through them sequentially which will give us a unique perspective into the ‘Poetry’ genre of the Scriptures.

The ESV Gospel Transformation Bible sums up Psalm 9 really well: “David’s “whole heart” is moved to praise his King (v. 1), for the Lord has upheld David’s cause and has given “righteous judgment” (v. 4). Here we see blended the infinite greatness and wonderful gentleness of God. He “sits enthroned forever” (v. 7) and “judges the world with righteousness” (v. 8). He is supreme in glory and might. And yet he is not aloof or uncaring. Instead, he is “a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble” (v. 9). For this reason, “the needy shall not always be forgotten” (v. 18).

In Jesus Christ we see these marks of God in beautiful flesh-and-blood reality. For Christ is both a lion and a lamb (Rev. 5:5–6). He is both supremely powerful (2 Thess. 1:7–10) and supremely gentle (Matt. 11:29). He is a strong refuge and a tender friend. In Jesus, we see concretely the God of Psalm 9. Jesus is “a stronghold for the oppressed” (Ps. 9:9). He came to preach good news to the poor (v. 18; Luke 4:18).”

Go even deeper by listening to the sermon from Sunday, July 25, 2021.
