Cosmic Restoration

We’re launching into a new sermon series through the book of Ephesians that we’re calling ‘New Creation.’ Ephesians unfolds a bold drama of the revelation/ apocalypse of the reconciliation of all things and the unification of Heaven and Earth through the work/person of Jesus. It’s a remarkable book and one that has long been heralded for its rich, deep theology.

Ephesians 2:1-22 contain two parallel passages: One that deals with the story of his non-Jewish audience from a cosmic perspective and the other from their covenantal perspective. This week, we narrowed in on vv. 1-10 (their story from a cosmic perspective). Paul asserts that they (we) were spiritually dead, alienated from God, and enslaved to the powers. There seemed to be no hope. “But God,” as v. 4 triumphantly declares, “being rich in mercy, because of thegreat love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” It’s absolutely crazy just how much is going on here and we made every attempt to dig in.
