Ephesians 1 Recap
We’re launching into a new sermon series through the book of Ephesians that we’re calling ‘New Creation.’ Ephesians unfolds a bold drama of the revelation/ apocalypse of the reconciliation of all things and the unification of Heaven and Earth through the work/person of Jesus. It’s a remarkable book and one that has long been heralded for its rich, deep theology.
For Week 6, we thought it would be a good idea to slow down, take a deep collective breath, and take one more hard look at everything going on in Ephesians 1 — because there is A LOT! Paul brings in a ton of ideas from the Hebrew Scriptures regarding topics such as blessing, election, predestination, adoption, sonship, provision, wisdom, etc. All of these ideas are to help the Church understand Christ’s role and their’s in ‘this age and the age to come.’ If that sounds crazy, it is. If it sounds ‘out there,’ it is. But Ephesians paints the reality-altering beauty that “Jesus was the suffering and exalted Messiah of Israel who fulfilled God’s calling for Israel and all humanity. Now, the people of Jesus share in his death, resurrection, and exalted rule over the cosmos. Jesus’ followers can now know Israel’s true calling and purpose (Psalm 110 and Daniel 7), which itself was always meant to be the realization of humanity’s true calling and purpose (Psalm 8 and Genesis 1).” — The Bible Project.
