Jonah finally prays, and what comes out is not a confession but a song. Every line is true. Some of it is the most beautiful theology in the book. And it is not enough. How can a man be all the way right and still all the way unchanged?

A man on a boat says throw me overboard, and the pagan crew says no. Jonah 1:12–17 gives us a prophet who is right about everything and wants none of it. The problem was never information, and it was never effort. It was a love in the wrong place.

A storm comes, and everyone on the boat responds but the prophet. Week 2 of Jonah traces a descent that ends in sleep, a creed that indicts the man reciting it, and a crew of pagans who worship the God his own mouth refused to name.

Most of us met Jonah in a children's Bible. But the fish gets two verses out of forty-eight, so the book is about something else. Week 1 opens with a prophet who hears God clearly, understands him perfectly, and then walks down to the harbor anyway.
